Juvederm and Restylane are the two most popular dermal fillers which are used to smooth away wrinkles and folds, enhance thin lips, and get rid of dark circles and bags underneath the eyes. Both Juvederm and Restylane are made of Hyaluronic Acid and are very effective, however, there are a few differences between them which may influence which filler would be better for you. Below are some of the differences between Juvederm and Restylane.

The Differences

As we mentioned, both Juvederm and Restylane are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), which is a natural sugar which is found in our skin. This is why the likelihood of an allergic reaction is very low with both Juvederm and Restylane. Juvederm, however, has a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid. This makes it a smoother compound than Restylane which has a more granular and bulky consistency. Because Juvederm is a lighter, smoother compound than Restylane it gives much better results when treating areas such as the lips and tear troughs under the eyes.

Juvederm has also been known to last longer than Restylane. On average, one Juvederm treatment lasts about 9-12 months, whereas Restylane only lasts around 6 months. This can make Juvederm treatments more cost-effective than Restylane over time.

The Similarities

Both Restylane and Juvederm can be used in most areas of the face to fill in volume loss. However, for reasons described above, Juvederm is preferred for the lips and underneath the eyes. Both products have a thicker formulation (Juvederm Ultra Plus and Perlane). These are used in areas which have moderate to severe volume loss such as the cheeks, temples, and hands.

The newer formulations of Juvederm and Restylane contain the local anesthetic Lidocaine. Lidocaine is a numbing medication that helps decrease the discomfort of the injection process.

How Much Does Juvederm or Restylane Cost?

Treatment with Juvederm or Restylane will cost about the same. Any differences in cost are usually due to the skill and experience of the injector along with location based differences in cost. On average, one syringe of Juvederm or Restylane will cost between $500-$700.

So Which One is Better?

All things considered, we prefer Juvederm over Restylane as our dermal filler of choice at the Z Center for Cosmetic Health. The pure hyaluronic acid and smooth consistency provides a more natural look and feel. In our experience we have found that Juvederm also lasts much longer than Restylane, especially when used in the lips or underneath the eyes.
